Ahmet Savaşan, President of the Cyprus Health Tourism Council, emphasized that today's people are trying to regain their health, which they have lost in their busy work and city life, in back-to-nature and back-to-yourself camps that include beauty, care cures, massage, aromatherapy, fitness, yoga and pilates.
Savaşan said that health tourism has become popular in recent years. Savaşan also stated that in many studies, both travel and health trends will gain even more importance in the coming years.
Savaşan said that according to the “World Travel Trends 2016” report, despite the terrorist incidents, refugee crisis and economic troubles affecting the world, there has been an increase in the tendency to travel around the world, adding that the number of international trips made in the world is 1.024 billion and the number of international tourists is 1.2 billion.
“New generation travelers do not want to be passive tourists”
Savaşan said that according to the projections of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the tourism sector is expected to continue to grow and reach a volume of 2 trillion dollars by 2020, emphasizing that the new generation of travel lovers want to be passive tourists who only take photos and look around.
Stating that there are changes in trends in tourism just like everything else, Savaşan said that many studies have shown that the new profile is ‘after meeting and talking to different people, discovering new cultures, learning while traveling around the world, in short, becoming a ”traveler'".
Pointing out that lying by the pool all day long and doing laps in front of the bar are out of fashion, Savaşan pointed out that what is in vogue in today's touristic travels is the health of body, soul and mind.
“Travel is essential for health protection”
Savaşan stated that people today do not see travel as a luxury, on the contrary, they see it as necessary to protect their health and pointed out that in our age when time is very precious, people use their travel periods to quit smoking, get in shape and find healing with methods that heal the soul and body such as detox (especially technology detox), yoga-meditation.
Stating that the world we live in is gradually disappearing, Savaşan said that everyone is now aware of the need to take care of everything from production to vacation, and that this has aroused great interest in everything that is slow and ecological in the world, including travel. Savaşan also pointed out that ‘slow travel’, ‘slow city’, ‘slow food’ and ‘eco travel’ enthusiasts are growing like an avalanche.
“Bleisure, Health & Wellness and Soft Adventure are trending”
Pointing out that the development of alternative and sustainable tourism types in Northern Cyprus is essential for increasing the added value of the country, Savaşan said that the Health & Wellness, Bleisure and Soft Adventure segments, which are growing and trending in the travel sector day by day, offer great opportunities for our country.
Explaining that this new category, which combines business and leisure travel and is called Bleisure, has entered the agenda of the world travel industry, Savaşan pointed out that the industry's habit of keeping ‘business and leisure’ separate from each other has come to an end. Savaşan said that while there are still those who adhere to strict business travel schedules, more and more people are starting to combine business travel with leisure, adding that “travelers who are tired of meetings and panels want to make their travels fun with excursions, good food and activities involving local culture. This is a shift that is very much in line with the trend of travelers seeking new and personal experiences.”.
“Baby boomers demand ‘soft adventure’”
Explaining that as the share of the generation born after the Second World War, called baby boomers, in the travel sector has expanded, the sense of adventure of these travelers has also become widespread, Savaşan said, “Baby boomers, who are of great importance in the world travel sector, have created a category called ‘soft adventure’ even though they do not want to jump out of airplanes or climb mountains.” Savaşan said that soft adventure can be defined as a category that ‘takes people out of the house but does not include activities with high adrenaline doses such as rafting or skydiving’ and that many activities such as fishing, hiking, cycling, horse riding, safari, city tours are carried out in this category.
Savaşan said that although not a new category in terms of the sector, health & wellness tourism has been booming recently, and that this type of tourism has reached a volume of billions of dollars and continues to grow. Savaşan pointed out that in order to achieve success in this type of tourism, it is necessary to understand what health and wellness tourism really means and explained that health and wellness travelers are travelers who want to renew themselves or who aim to turn their travels, which would normally be a leisure / business holiday, into an opportunity to find alternative health services. Stating that the structure of Northern Cyprus is suitable for development in this field, Savaşan emphasized that a share of this market can be easily obtained by diversifying the services in hotels.
