Health Tourism Council President Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Sava\u015fan took the first step towards the development of the \u2019age-friendly country, Northern Cyprus\u201c project at the EMITT Fair, which brought together tourism professionals from more than 90 countries.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the statement made by the Council, President Ahmet Sava\u015fan met with representatives of countries from Asia, Europe, Far East and Latin America participating in the fair within the scope of EMITT contacts and signed new agreements for the mutual development of health tourism.<\/p>\n

In the statement, it was also stated that Sava\u015fan, who also met with Dr. Kemal Ayd\u0131n, Founding President of the World Council on Ageing, reached an agreement to initiate the development of the \u201cage-friendly country, Northern Cyprus\u201d project.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>Legal and infrastructure work must be done...<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stating that there were approximately 400 million people aged 60 and over living in developing countries in 2002 and that this number is estimated to increase to 840 million in 2025, Sava\u015fan emphasized that the island can become a center of attraction in third age tourism if legal and infrastructural works are carried out so that older adults can prefer Northern Cyprus for both advanced active life holidays and the health services they need.<\/p>\n

Underlining that if the necessary steps are taken in this field and the right promotion and marketing activities are carried out, tourism revenues can be doubled and the TRNC can close the foreign trade deficit with tourism, Ahmet Sava\u015fan stated that the aim of the \u201cage-friendly country, Northern Cyprus\u201d project, which is envisaged to be developed, is to ensure sustainability in tourism and increase tourism revenues.<\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>We are aiming for WHO standards in the TRNC <\/strong><\/p>\n

Noting that countries that understand the needs of a special group such as older adults and make it a culture to meet these needs are preferred by qualified tourists and get a significant share from this market, Dr. Kemal Ayd\u0131n stated that the project aims to bring Northern Cyprus to the World Health Organization's (WHO) Healthy Cities and Age-Friendly Countries standards.<\/p>\n
