Sava\u015fan said, \u201cSince the 1980s, when the HIV Virus was first identified, more than 35 million patients have lost their lives. In other words, as many people as the population of Canada have died due to AIDS. The United Nations AIDS Program (UNAIDS) announced that 770 thousand people with AIDS died worldwide in 2018. According to the UNAIDS report, there was a 36 percent decrease in the number of people infected with HIV between 2000 and 2017. HIV-related death rates also decreased by 38 percent.\u2019.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Many people in TRNC do not know they have HIV!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Noting that a significant number of people living with HIV do not know that they are carriers of the virus in the world or in the TRNC, Ahmet Sava\u015fan said, \u201cWhen we look at our country, we see that 75 citizens of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus are living with HIV diagnosis as of November 2019. Despite the positive developments in the world, there are still many steps to be taken in our country in the fight against the HIV virus.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HIV positive and AIDS are different things!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Pointing out that all segments of society, from governments to non-governmental organizations, from universities to health institutions, should take action to raise awareness about AIDS, Sava\u015fan pointed out that there is a big difference between being HIV positive and having AIDS. Sava\u015fan said, \u201cAIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is the name given to the syndrome that occurs if an HIV positive person is not treated. It means the collapse of the person's immune system due to the virus. HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is the name of this virus and if individuals living with HIV are not treated for many years, the virus causes the syndrome.\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Anyone who has any suspicion should be screened...<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Underlining that this important day, when people around the world come together to fight against HIV, should be used to support people living with HIV, to commemorate those who have died from AIDS-related diseases and to raise public awareness, Sava\u015fan pointed out that early diagnosis and treatment are very important in the fight against AIDS.
