Cyprus Health Tourism Council President Dr. Ahmet Savaşan visited health tourists and patients in our country on the occasion of the New Year.
According to the statement made by the Council; Dr. Ahmet Savaşan, together with the members of the Board of Directors of the Council, Dr. Hayat İzel, President of the Private Hospitals Association, Dr. Remzi Gardiyanoğlu, President of the Association of Self-Employed Physicians, visited tourists who are in our country to receive health services, as well as patients in elderly care homes and hospitals, and congratulated them on the New Year and gave them various gifts.
“THERE ARE 1 BILLION PEOPLE OVER 65 IN THE WORLD AND 130 MILLION IN EUROPE...”
Stating that the activities aimed at meeting the needs of elderly people, which are referred to in the literature as 3rd age tourism, are included in health tourism, Ahmet Savaşan reminded in his speech during the visit that human life span is getting longer day by day and the world population is aging rapidly and said, ’There are currently one billion people in the world and 130 million people over the age of 65 in Europe. By 2050, it is estimated that there will be 2 billion elderly people in the world. Many scientific publications show us that people want to spend an active old age. From the same studies, we understand that people see the last 10 years of their lives as a healthy old age and also spend a significant part of their assets to spend this period in a healthy way.“.
“ELDERLY CARE HOMES IN EUROPE ARE WHERE CORONAVIRUS IS MOST ACTIVE”
Pointing out that elderly care homes across Europe, from Spain to Serbia, have become the most active sites of coronavirus infection, Council President Dr. Ahmet Savaşan pointed out that according to the World Health Organization, deaths in long-term care facilities account for almost half of coronavirus-related deaths in Europe.

Underlining that Northern Cyprus has gained an important advantage in elderly care thanks to the success achieved in the fight against coronavirus, Ahmet Savaşan noted that with the implementation of the age-friendly Northern Cyprus project, which was initiated under the leadership of the council, in 2021, elderly individuals will be offered healthy and active life opportunities. Savaşan emphasized that in this way, tourism, which has come to a standstill, will gain sustainable quality and many segments from tradesmen, producers, livestock breeders to tourism will start to generate income from tourism again.
“ENTREPRENEURS SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED TO INVEST IN ELDERLY CARE...”
Underlining that the necessary legal and structural preparations for the development of this field, which will enable our country to generate more tourism income in the new normal period when both states and families will have to spend more on elderly care and comfort, Savaşan pointed out that directing entrepreneurs in the TRNC to this field and providing attractive opportunities for foreign investors will ensure that the Turkish Cypriot economy continues to develop, new job opportunities are opened for young people and our political problems are viewed from different perspectives.

At the end of his speech, Ahmet Savaşan wished that 2021 will be an opportunity to do what we could not do in the previous year and to realize our unfinished projects, that we can embrace our loved ones without fear by getting rid of the coronavirus threat, that we can make up for the losses of the past year by embracing our work with all hands, that wars and their suffering will end and that we will look to the future with even more hope.
