“THE EU IS FORCING US TO LEAVE”
UBP Central Executive Board Member Dr. Ahmet Savaşan evaluated the decisions taken at the European Union Summit in a television program he attended. Savaşan emphasized that the EU sided with the Greek Cypriots and “forced the Turkish Cypriots to focus on options other than a federal solution”.
UBP FMK Member Dr. Savaşan said, “While the European Union sets the goal of convening a comprehensive conference to solve the problems in the Eastern Mediterranean, it also forces Turkey to engage in relations and negotiations with the Greek Cypriot side, which it calls the ‘Republic of Cyprus’. Although Turkey has given the necessary response to this approach, we also need to learn the necessary lessons from it”, Savaşan said, adding that “this approach will lead Turkish Cypriots to strengthen their separatist activities”.
Savaşan said, “Of course we want the TRNC to be recognized. But we are also aware that this is a long road. In the first stage, I think we need to increase our visibility in the international arena in cooperation with Turkey” and underlined that “the way to achieve this is to elect a President who will work in harmony with Turkey”.
UBP FMC Member Dr. Ahmet Savaşan said:
“It is clear what Akıncı is trying to do... But some of our other Presidential candidates, in a very naive and well-meaning way, tell us about their dreams. While those dreams are nice, the realities of our region are different. What these realities are has shown itself once again with the decisions taken at the EU summit on Friday. The European Union told Turkey to ‘recognize the Greek Cypriot side as the Republic of Cyprus’. Since this will not happen, it means that there will not be a solution as the EU wants. In this situation, we need to promote ourselves with our own capacity and organize a better life as much as possible. And we can only do this in cooperation with Turkey. It is time for everyone to see this and for the attempts to sell illusions to the public to stop.”
