UBP MP Ahmet Savaşan jokingly referred to the opposition MPs who opposed the construction of the building by saying “The new Parliament is a gift not only to the MPs but also to the people”.
National Unity Party (UBP) MP Ahmet Savaşan made evaluations on the new Parliament building in the “Morning in Cyprus” program broadcast on KIBRIS TV. Referring to the historical importance of the old Parliament building, Savaşan emphasized that the new building has become a center open to the use of all segments in accordance with the requirements of the age.
Ahmet Savaşan stated that the old Parliament building is the symbol of the ongoing struggle since the 1970s and said, ’The old ones know; the parliament building used to be a cigarette factory. With the conditions of that day, it was transformed into a parliament in the best way possible and fulfilled its legislative function. It was a national parliament where important decisions were taken and witnessed many actions.“.
Stating that the new Parliament building has eliminated deficiencies such as infrastructure, parking lot, digital transformation and library, Savaşan said, “A modest room has been created for each MP. Most importantly, we have 16 meeting rooms. Great spaces have been created for group meetings and work.”.
Answering the criticisms against the new Parliament building, Savaşan said, “We would like to host those who are against it. Let them see what we can do with these facilities. We also have some aggressive friends in the main opposition. I jokingly said, ‘You opposed so much, I guess you will join us online’, but they settled in before us.”.
Emphasizing that the new building is not only for the president, prime minister or MPs, Savaşan said, “This building is a gift to the TRNC people. We would like non-governmental organizations, associations and researchers to make use of this building. Especially the library will be a very valuable resource for researchers and anyone who wants to contribute to the country.”.
