UBP MP Ahmet Savaşan said, “The expectation of the people is that the government and the opposition work together with sincerity...”.
Pointing out that governments have important duties in creating standards where individuals with Down syndrome can live like normal people and ensuring that they can receive the physiotherapy and mental education they need, President of the Health Tourism Council and National Unity Party (UBP) Deputy Dr. Dr. Dr. Dr. K. K. K. Ahmet Savaşan, He pointed out that various steps have been taken so far to integrate individuals with Down Syndrome into society, but these steps have been insufficient.
Expressing his belief that all members of parliament, regardless of party affiliation, will act with the awareness of their responsibilities Ahmet Savaşan, Savaşan emphasized that the government and the opposition should work together and work sincerely to achieve results as soon as possible in order to make the arrangements that individuals with special needs need both legally and in other areas. Savaşan emphasized that the expectations of the people are in this direction.
“THE MOST IMPORTANT REQUIREMENT IS EDUCATION...”
Cyprus Health Tourism Council President and UBP MP Dr. Ahmet Savaşan In a television program he participated in, he referred to the World Down Syndrome Day on March 21 and drew attention to the fact that education is the most important requirement for the integration of people with Down syndrome into society. Emphasizing that people with Down syndrome are successful in society with the education initiated from birth Ahmet Savaşan, “Today, almost all people with Down syndrome go to school and are successful,” he said, adding that "these people can easily participate in social life and many of them are able to lead semi-independent lives.
“THEY ARE NOW GRADUATING FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND EVEN UNIVERSITY...”
Noting that these individuals, who used to be said to be unable to study, are now able to graduate from high school and even university Ahmet Savaşan, “People born with Down syndrome can learn a second language, work and succeed in life with regular and disciplined education starting from birth,” said Mr. Savaşan. Underlining that the increase in both learning and independent living levels with various education and therapies applied in the world in the last 40 years has been great, Savaşan said that Down syndrome is not a disease.
“WE, AS POLITICIANS, MUST PUT FORTH THE NECESSARY EFFORT...”
Underlining that approaching individuals with Down syndrome as “diseased” or “problematic” is a big mistake Ahmet Savaşan, continued his statement with the following statements:
“Properly educated individuals with Down syndrome can develop themselves to the point where they can live their lives without the need for any external support. For example, individuals with Down syndrome, who normally have serious difficulties with motor functions, can achieve hand-eye coordination and motor activities like normal individuals if they receive the necessary training. Therefore, we as politicians should work to ensure that people with Down syndrome can live like normal people, and we should make every effort to provide them with physiotherapy and mental education.
WE MUST BUILD A SUSTAINABLE STRUCTURE...
Each of us is born with a different set of genes, and the population as a whole is born with a typical set of genes. When we look back at this, we define these individuals as “normal”. In nature, everything is normal, everything is natural. This understanding is extra important for us to overcome our ego and realize ecological integrity. In order to develop social awareness on this issue, it is vital that the state, government, opposition, private sector and non-governmental organizations work hand in hand to establish a sustainable structure, not just one day a year. We see that this awareness exists in our country, although it is not sufficient. I believe that if we work hand in hand, we will take the necessary steps on these issues and make the lives of these special people easier.”
