UBP Group Deputy Chairman Ahmet Savaşan, in his speech on the floor of the Parliament, announced that they will support the referendum process in order to solve the long-standing problems in the judiciary. Savaşan also stated that the process is planned to be carried out away from political discussions and to be handled in the Ad Hoc Committee where all parties will be represented.

National Unity Party (UBP) Group Deputy Chairman Ahmet Savaşan, In his speech on the floor of the Parliament, Savaşan announced that they will support the referendum process in order to eliminate the long-standing congestion in the judiciary. Savaşan emphasized that the process should be handled with a constructive understanding, away from political discussions.

In his speech at the Parliament, Savaşan emphasized the importance of dialogue and compromise and stated that since the beginning of the legislative year, the DP-YDP coalition government under the UBP prime ministership has brought many important laws to the country. Reminding that in the last four years, some of the laws brought by the government were enacted with the contribution of the main opposition, Savaşan pointed out that the main opposition also has a responsibility to meet the needs of the judiciary.

Stating that informing the public correctly is of great importance, Savaşan reminded that although the two referendums held in the past were passed unanimously by the Parliament, they could not be explained sufficiently and did not receive support from the public because they were held together with other elections.

“UBP SUPPORTS THE JUDICIARY'S DEMAND FOR A SEPARATE REFERENDUM”

Stating that the Supreme Council of Justice visited both the government and the main opposition today, Savaşan said that he also participated in these meetings. He stated that the highest level of the judiciary expressed the view that a referendum on the judiciary should be held without combining it with any election in order to meet the needs that have been going on for years.

Stating that it is envisaged that this issue will be handled in a special and temporary committee in cooperation with the main opposition, where all parties will be represented, Savaşan said that the UBP finds this request of the judiciary justified and will make its contribution.

“THE JUDICIARY'S NEED FOR A REFERENDUM SHOULD NOT BE POLITICIZED”

Reminding that the government is represented in the Parliament with 29 deputies, Savaşan stated that 34 votes are needed for the referendum to be realized and therefore cooperation with the main opposition is inevitable. Emphasizing that the issue should not be politicized, Savaşan said Unal Üstel’s statement the day before was about the timetable of the process.

“THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN AD HOC COMMITTEE REPRESENTING ALL PARTIES IS ENVISAGED”

Reminding that there are certain waiting periods in constitutional processes to go to referendum, Savaşan stated that instead of discussing the constitutional amendment in the Legal Committee, where the UBP is in the majority, it was conveyed to the members of the Supreme Court of Justice at the meeting held in the morning that the necessary step would be taken to discuss the constitutional amendment in an “Ad Hoc Committee” where all political parties and independent MPs would be represented to ensure participation.

CTP‘S CONTRIBUTION TO THE PROCESS IS VALUABLE”

Stating that they attach importance to the views of the main opposition, Savaşan said Republican Turkish Party’s contribution to the process is valuable and stated that it would not be right to draw the issue into different areas. Savaşan concluded his speech by stating that the aim of his speech was to inform the Parliament and the public in the right way.
