Reminding that the World Health Organization (WHO) changed the first place in the list of the most common types of cancer in 2020, lung cancer, which has been the most common type of cancer for the last 20 years, has fallen to the second place and breast cancer has risen to the first place, Dr. Ahmet Savaşan, President of the Cyprus Health Tourism Council, emphasized that experts agree that it is vital to recognize one's own breast structure and to regularly examine oneself manually and visually in early diagnosis of the disease.
In a television program he participated in, Dr. Ahmet Savaşan, who made evaluations on the subject due to October being breast cancer awareness month, said that when WHO data is examined, it is seen that breast cancer, which accounts for approximately 12 percent of cancer cases worldwide, is the most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide and the leading cause of cancer deaths.
Cancer cases will rise to 30 million by 2040
Pointing out that WHO data show that the total number of cancer cases will increase from 19.3 million in 2020 to 30 million in 2040, Savaşan said that WHO warns against risk factors and emphasizes that about one-third of cancer deaths are caused by smoking and alcohol use, high body mass index, low consumption of fruits and vegetables and lack of physical activity.
Our expectation is that women will self-check and notice the changes...
Stating that experts agree that increasing awareness about breast cancer and self-checks by patients at home will make a significant contribution to early diagnosis, Dr. Ahmet Savaşan said: “Women are not expected to diagnose breast cancer by looking at the symptoms of breast cancer. The expectation here is that women should do their own self-checks at certain intervals and recognize possible changes and see the relevant specialist. It should not be forgotten that most of the changes detected in the breast are due to benign causes. The important thing here is to detect a small number of malignant lesions and to carry out the necessary treatment without delay.”.
Self-Check teaches how to do the right breast check
Ahmet Savaşan said that experts emphasize that it is of vital importance for the early diagnosis of the disease to recognize one's own breast structure and to regularly examine oneself manually and visually, and stated that with the self-check application developed by the Health Tourism Council, it is possible for women to perform breast examinations with the right methods at home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Shelf-check is being promoted on social media, TV and Telsim SMS
Underlining that breast self-examination has an important role in the early detection of breast cancer before diagnostic methods such as clinical breast examination, ultrasonography, mammography, MRI and biopsy, Ahmet Savaşan said that the benefits of the Self-Check application, which allows women to perform breast examinations with the right methods, have been introduced to all people living in the country with both the public service announcement broadcast on social media and television and the sms messages sent by TRNC Telsim.
