The Cyprus Health Tourism Council published a message on June 5, World Environment Day and emphasized that the healthy future of the Earth depends on consuming resources knowing the limits of what the planet can offer.
In the statement, referring to the United Nations World Tourism Organization's declaration of 2017 as the ’Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development“, Council President Ahmet Savaşan stated that ”within the self-renewal capacity of the planet, if we follow its rules, we can create a sustainable society together and live in prosperity by redefining our current consumption culture within this society“.
SUSTAINABILITY IS A MUST FOR TOURISM...
Stating that sustainable tourism and travel understanding is a planning and implementation understanding that will provide continuity to all natural, biological, ecological, ecological, cultural, social, in short, renewable resources, create conditions for touristic products to be subject to supply for many years, and use them optimally and rationally to develop and protect resources, especially the environment, Savaşan said, “sustainable tourism is not a type of tourism, but a condition for tourism and travel and a must for tourism.”.
UNSUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION BEHAVIORS ARE ON THE RISE...
He also mentioned that the planet's resources are consumed more in industrialized countries and pointed out that unsustainable consumption behaviors are increasing all over the world.
1.3 BILLION TONS OF FOOD IS WASTED...
Stating that 3 billion middle class consumers, mostly from developing countries, will join this increase in 2030, Savaşan said that food waste constitutes the most important pillar of this consumption. Stating that according to UNEP data, almost 1 billion people go without food every year and 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted, Savaşan said: ’It is crucial for the planet that we have more sustainable lifestyles.“.
WE MUST SHAPE LIFE WITHIN THE LIMITATIONS OF THE PLANET...
Stating that it is calculated that in 2050, if the current production and consumption habits continue and the population of the planet reaches 9.6 billion, 3 planets will be needed to sustain our lives, Savaşan said that the best strategy for a healthy future is to shape life within the limitations of the planet.
PLANETARY PROSPERITY DEPENDS ON RESPONSIBLE USE OF RESOURCES...
Pointing out that the welfare of the planet, the environment and the healthy functioning of the economy ultimately depend on the responsible use of resources, Savaşan stated that states in general and individuals in particular have a great responsibility in ensuring this.
MANY RESOURCES IN THE ECOSYSTEM ARE SOUNDING THE ALARM...
Underlining that much more is being consumed today than what the planet can offer to people in a sustainable way, Savaşan said that many resources in the ecosystem are alarmed or already irreversibly depleted.
AN OPPORTUNITY TO REVIEW ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES...
Stating that the healthy future of the world depends on consuming resources knowing the limits of what the planet can offer, Savaşan underlined that Environment Day creates an important opportunity for states to review their policies on the basis of these facts and to take measures in parallel.
