Ahmet Savaşan, President of the Health Tourism Council, published a message on the occasion of the Week of the Elderly on March 18-24. Savaşan said, “If healthy aging requires low risk for disease and hospice, high physical and cognitive function and active commitment to life, it is an inevitable requirement that the living environment and the environment should be compatible with this.” He pointed out that especially governments and local administrations have a great responsibility in realizing this.
“LIFE EXPECTANCY WILL CONTINUE TO INCREASE...”
Stating that life expectancy has increased worldwide since 1950 due to the impact of developments in science and technology on health services, Savaşan said that this increase is expected to continue in the coming years. Pointing out that the increase in life expectancy means that people are aging, Savaşan said, “aging causes physiological changes in functions such as vision, hearing and mobility in the human body over time, and these changes negatively affect the quality of life.”.
“OLD AGE HAS MANY DIMENSIONS...”
Pointing out that a vicious cycle emerges with the addition of chronic diseases, psychosocial problems and the consequences of inactivity to the physiological changes that occur with aging, Savaşan underlined that there are many dimensions of aging.
“CHRONOLOGICALLY EVALUATING OLD AGE IS INCOMPLETE...”
Stating that calendar age is understood when chronological aging is mentioned, Savaşan said that according to the definition made by the World Health Organization, people aged 65 and over are considered elderly. Emphasizing that it would be an incomplete approach to consider old age only as chronological aging today, Savaşan stated that other definitions such as biological, psychological and social aging should also be taken into consideration when making this definition.
“HEALTHY AGING SHOULD BE TARGETED...”
Stating that a global effort is needed for all societies in the world to age at a similar pace, Savaşan pointed out that planning and research aimed primarily at healthy aging should be carried out and supported instead of focusing only on the health problems caused by aging, as stated in the Aging and Health program published in 1995.
“LEGAL REGULATION IS A MUST...”
Pointing out that in order for healthy aging to take place, it is necessary to be an “Elderly Friendly Society”, Savaşan emphasized that an Elderly Friendly Society should be understood as a society that actively recognizes the capacities and abilities of the elderly, responds to their needs and choices, respects their ideas and lifestyles, protects the vulnerable, encourages participation in all areas and moments of community life, makes the necessary legal arrangements, establishes services and structures.
“AN ELDERLY-FRIENDLY SOCIETY MUST BE CREATED...”
“Starting from the concept of Elderly Friendly Society, Savaşan said that the creation of Elderly Friendly Cities is a vital necessity for our country's people, “this is also a necessity for our country to be preferred by third age tourists”. Savaşan said, “In this important week, we kiss the hands of our elders, the most precious treasures of our family and social life, who are instrumental in carrying the historical accumulation of our society to the present day and ensuring that our national culture and civilization values reach the future, and we wish them all a healthy aging.”.
